This Sunday at 12 p.m., WTMJ Radio will take Green Bay Packers fans on a radio time machine to the Super season of 1996, when the Packers won their 12th world championship and third Vince Lombardi Trophy.
But they might not have pulled it off had they not beaten the San Francisco 49ers in arguably one of the most underrated contests in Packers history.
On October 14, 1996, the Packers and 49ers met in a rematch of their 1995 NFC Divisional Playoff. The Monday Night lights shined upon what was a game for the ages.
Green Bay overcame a 49ers squad laden with Hall of Fame players, a double-digit deficit and an injury-depleted receiving corps in a marathon contest that went overtime.
Team records were set before the game was decided. It was almost Tuesday morning football before an ending for the ages.
As it turned out, this game eventually decided home field advantage for the 1996 playoffs – which would have meant the Packers would have had to go through San Francisco again to get to the Super Bowl. The result made their eventual Super triumph that much more possible.
(And no, the game is not being televised. You can only check it out on radio.)
Tune in at 12 p.m. on-air on WTMJ and worldwide on desktop and laptop computer (click here to listen).
