For more than a century, Beyond Vision has been employing people who are visually impaired.
WTMJ’s Erik Bilstad visited the Milwaukee company and met Jackie Ackley, a blind woman who works on the factory floor.
“I lost my vision 16 years ago, diabetic retinopathy,” she explained. “I woke up and thought, ‘Oh my goodness it’s dark out.'”
After working at the Milwaukee Count Zoo for 20 years, it was an adjustment for Ackley.
“(Going) blind was a life changer for me,” she admitted. “(But) it wasn’t all bad. I have met a lot of nice people. It might have been a lesson in humility for me.”
