  • Is There Really No Suing In Football?

Last Saturday morning,  two teams in the St. Louis Park-Rock Football Association  finished a very hard fought game.  After the game, the players lined up to shake each others' hands.  A videotape of the game shows the Head Coach of one team pushing a player from the other team as they pass each other in line.

According to the coach, the player on the other team was moving down the line saying "You suck" to his opponents.  When he got to the coach, the player allegedly said "You ---ing suck".  At that point, the coach says he pushed the player.

Did I mention that this was a football game involving eleven-year-olds?

In any event, after the player's parents saw the videotape of the incident, they called the police and demanded that assault charges be issued against the coach.  Officials with the league are demanding that he resign.

Later today, we'll  discuss whether the coach was out of line and, if so, what should happen to him?

If you'd like to watch the videotape of the incident, please click here.

  • Frank's Folly: Tearing Down The Hoan?

I'd say that it's like trying to put lipstick on a pig - but that phrase has been somewhat overused recently.

Regardless, at I wrote a month ago, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi's trial balloon about tearing down the Hoan Bridge is an idea that - if it were any dumber - would bark!  The fact that Busalacchi has just blown $175,000 in taxpayer money for a "study" designed to justify the plan doesn't make it any better.  It simply makes Busalacchi look even more irresponsible.

This new "study" produced by a consulting outfit called HNTB and commissioned by the DOT at a cost of $175,000 (!) claims that tearing down the Hoan Bridge would lead to $5.7 billion in develpment on land under the Hoan and the creation of over 8000 jobs.  Right - and I promise that I'll love you in the morning.

By the way, HNTB executives are enormous campaign contributors to Jim Doyle.  I'm certain though that any link between these contributions and the fact that Busalacchi chose HNTB to be the beneficiary of $175,000 in taxpayer largess was purely coincidental.  By the way, did I remember to tell you that I promise to love you in the morning?

The basic idea is that if you tear down the Hoan Bridge and install streets, commercial and residential development will flock to the area under the bridge.  This is the same area that is, of course, in the immediate proximity of Milwaukee's sewage treatment plant.  Forgive me if I'm somewhat skeptical about the number of people wanting to purchase $500,000 condos in the shadow of Jones Island.

Actually the claims being made about the area under the Hoan are eerily reminiscent of the claims that were made by the Norquist Administration about the area under the Park East Freeway.  Remember how we were promised that if we took down the freeway, we'd see an explosion of development?  Well, the only exposions you see recently in that area come from the destruction of abandoned buildings.

Six years after demolition, large portions of the Park East Freeway corridor remain nothing more than a moonscape.  Sort of a "Baghdad of the Beerline".

Why you'd consider tearing down an even more utilized roadway like the Hoan Bridge is, in a word, crazy!

If you tear down a perfectly good bridge and build roads, I concede that it will create jobs.  By that logic though, why not tear down Miller Park and then rebuild it?  That would create jobs too - and would make just about as much sense.

Residents of the area seem to consider "Frank's Folly" as pretty much of a non-starter.  Good.  We've had a lot of ill-considered public works projects around the area recently (think of the acoustically outstanding but largely vacant $42 million white elephant that we call the Milwaukee Theater).  The last thing we need is one more!

  • The Cult Of The One!

I know that it infuriates some on the Left - but I'm with my colleagues Charlie Sykes and James T. Harris on this one.

The new music video released on YouTube by a "grassroots" group not affiliated with the Obama campaign showing cute kids singing Obama's praises is, well, really creepy.  As much as Obama's supporters resent the inevitable comparison, it's also extremely reminiscent of the chilling beer garden scene in the film "Cabaret" where the young man sings "Tomorrow Belongs To Me".

Let me say this clearly.  By making the reference to "Cabaret", I am in no way equating Barack Obama with Adolph Hitler! I do however think that some Obama supporters are exhibiting an almost cult-like devotion to their candidate.  Beyond this, at the risk of alienating the cultists among us, I don't think blind devotion to anything (except perhaps the Green Bay Packers) is healthy.

This devotion among Obama supporters has manifested itself in some very troubling ways lately.

For example, there was the concerted attack launched by Obama supporters at  WGN Radio in Chicago after the station provided a a forum for a pair of authors who had written materials critical of Obama.  Then, there was the announcement in Missouri that Obama "truth squads" comprised of law enforcement officials would be fact-checking ads run against Obama.

As an aside, perhaps some of those "truth squads" could focus their attention on the blatantly false ad that the Obama campaign has been running in Wisconsin about McCain's position on stem cell research.

Three weeks ago, John McCain was leading in the polls.  Those same polls now suggest that if the election were held today, Obama would win.  Who knows what will happen a month from now?

Regardless, everyone would do well do remember that we're electing men and women to office - not elevating them to the status of deities.  After all, tomorrow really belongs to all of us.

  • Wednesday "Sound Off" And "What's Hot" Replays

During our "Sound Off" segment Wednesday on "Live at 3" on Today's TMJ 4, we discussed how much faith you put in pre-election polls?  During our "What's Hot" segments, we discussed a joke by Sarah Palin that is getting some attention in advance of tomorrow's debate and whether it was an overreaction to fire a guy for playing "Go Cubs Go" at Miller Park. You can also watch my friend Silvia Acevedo and I disagree about the merits of a soon-to-be closed restaurant (Hint: she liked the place, I didn't).

If you missed the show, you can catch the replays by clicking on the respective links.
