Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett calls for the firing of a police officer charged with murder.
The Journal Sentinel says Barrett wrote Chief Alfonso Morales, saying he should terminate Michael Mattioli and that he has the legal right to act immediately.
Mattioli is charged in connection with the off-duty death of a man he allegedly got into a fight with during a party at the officer’s home.
Barrett writes that Mattioli’s discharge would stop taxpayers from having to pay a salary to an individual charged with first degree reckless homicide.
The letter comes hours after the Fire and Police Commission ordered MPD to stop its internal probe of the case so it could take the investigation over.
